original project nbha collected a wide range of information relating to black history and is committed to disseminating that information and does so through a range of educational projects. as part of the shaping the future project, nbha has worked with educationalists and teachers to create resources that are linked to the national curriculum so that black history and diversity can be incorporated into classroom teaching. our community northamptonshire black history association has developed from a community project established in 1982, as a volunteer led, community based initiative. in the summer of 2005, the northamptonshire black history association formed as a membership organisation to carry on the activities of the project. our history northamptonshire’s black history goes back over 800 years, and is unusually well-recorded due to the commitment of local volunteer historians over the past 30 years. settler communities from africa, asia and the caribbean grew strongly in northamptonshire during the second half of the twentieth century.their organisations grew too, and with them came an interest in tracing and recording the past. northamptonshire black history association we are recruiting a treasurer we are looking for a new treasurer to join our current board of trustees. the successful applicant will preferably have the following skills: •qualified or trainee accountant/bookkeeper with demonstrated commercial awareness and knowledge. •knowledge of charity sorp and impending changes. •competent use of it skills. •ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the board and other stakeholders. •analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement. •understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. •good communication and leadership skills. •demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices. •dedicated to nbha’s objectives and willing to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies. •skills and experience in one or more areas of non-executive governance and management e.g. strategic planning, business management, financial/accountancy, understanding of hr issues, experience of trusts or other grant-giving bodies particularly fundraising and legal knowledge. •a team-oriented approach to problem-solving and to management. the treasurer will work closely with the chairman and board of trustees. the treasurer will be responsible for: budgeting and strategic financial planning •ensuring all strategic plans are financially appraised and budgets are aligned to both short-term and long-term objectives each year. •overseeing planning/budgeting processes in participation with the board and constructively challenge where required. •suggesting alternative scenarios while evaluating strategic plans as a part of the risk management process and as a part of performance and reporting scenarios. •creating greater transparency and accountability to improve resource allocation and charity’s image by adding specific measures as per sorp guidelines. management reporting •ensuring a high standard of management accounting is maintained in order to safeguard assets. •liaising with the chair and trustees to prepare and produce management accounts regularly. statutory financial reporting •board level liaison with external auditors on specific issues in the auditing process and related board representations. •guiding and advising fellow trustees to formally approve the annual report and audited accounts. •explain technicalities of accounts in plain language which can be fully understood by the trustees. reserves policy •developing a reserves policy and safeguarding the organisation’s finances. •keeping the board informed of free reserves position regularly and providing advice to cope with changing circumstances. governance •leading the board’s duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, invested and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements. •advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plans and overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process. •leading the development and implementation of financial reserves, cost management and investment policies. you will need to be available for monthly trustee meetings (usually held at our office in northampton on a weekday evening). you must also be available to carry out the responsibilities of a treasurer (hours flexible, as long as within key financial deadlines). if you are interested in joining us as a trustee, please contact us for further information. our
